Happy Rooms

We commissioned Kat and her collaborator Hollie Nottman to create a room for our Happy Rooms project in Middlesbrough. Their room, Animal Party was a joyful, engaging space, much loved by our younger visitors (and many older ones too!). Kat and Hollie were a dream to work with - very organised and versatile and they worked incredibly hard to produce a wonderful, high-quality room that fit our requirements perfectly.

Happy Rooms ran in Middlesbrough from 3rd August to 22nd September 2024 and welcomed over 15,000 visitors through it’s doors. The project was created in an empty shop, formally a M&S, it was a wonderful way to add joy and play into a disused space.

Designs for the Mural Walls

We decided on the theme of an animal fancy dress party for our Happy Room, and I created designs for the mural walls, that would incorporate 3D elements, and small critters to be discovered hidden under wooden flaps. I couldn’t resist adding a homage to the traditional party staple, a cheesy hedgehog!

On this wall the characters in the band we all inspired by popular musicians, can you guess them all? Some of the octopus’ arms came out of the wall, sculpted in 3D by Hollie, which served as hooks to hang musical instruments from. The bananas were also 3D and served as targets for playing hoopla.

Huge thanks to Stellar Creates for commissioning this project.
